Where this conversion is used

HVAC and refrigeration technicians measure evacuation in microns of mercury: 1 micron = 1 millitorr = 0.001 Torr. The common evacuation target of 500 microns is 0.5 Torr, 0.67 mbar or 66.7 Pa.

Microns are an absolute scale, so they do not depend on altitude or weather, unlike inches of mercury vacuum. That is why digital micron gauges are used to prove a system is dry and leak-free.

Frequently asked questions

How many Torr are in 1 micron?

1 micron = 0.001 Torr. In the other direction, 1 Torr = 1,000 microns.

How do I convert microns to Torr?

Divide the value in microns by 1,000. Example: 500 microns = 0.5 Torr.

What is 500 microns in Torr?

500 microns is 0.5 Torr, which is 0.667 mbar or 66.7 Pa absolute.

Why do HVAC technicians use microns?

Because the readings that matter (a few hundred microns) are far too small to see on an inHg or psi gauge. 500 microns is only 0.02 inHg away from a perfect vacuum.
